"Ringing can refer to any use of a bell, be it fast, slow, melodic,
monotonal etc. To "toll" a bell usually refers to a slow,
regular and often mournful single note on the bell."
"I think the definition you found for a tolling bell is correct. It's
often used to sound literary or poetic, as it evokes a feeling of
sadness, whereas if you say the bell was ringing, that is quite neutral."
