https://amandascookin.com/traditional-english-trifle/

"I think there are lots of recipes for trifle. [...]

I don't quite remember what used to be in the bottom layer of the trifle we used to have.

I still seem to remember that it was digestive biscuits, maybe that had been soaked in fruit juice.

As you can see, Amanda adds sherry in her recipe, but you don't need to do that.

It's interesting that she mentions Bird's custard powder, which is what we always have at home.

Lots of puddings go with custard, including Christmas pudding, steam syrup pudding, and crumble.

We always had Bird's custard. You have to heat milk in a saucepan and stir the powder in.

You can get instant custard that you add hot water to, but it doesn't taste as good."

"The word 'trifle' can be used to mean anything small or insignificant, something frivolous,

a small piece of entertainment or music, a small joke or piece of comedy, etc.

It can also be used to mean 'a small amount', as in, 'It cost a trifle over 5 pounds.'

The name of the dessert comes from this meaning, I suppose because it's a fun or not serious dessert."
